Daisy Ridley led the Star Wars sequel trilogy as Rey from 2015 to 2019, moving from a nobody to a Palpatine and then inheriting the Skywalker legacy. The sequel trilogy proved divisive, with The Rise of Skywalker, in particular, missing the mark. However, even fans who were disappointed in the films considered Ridley's performance to be one of the strong points of the series.

After the trilogy concluded, Ridley took a step away from Star Wars, focusing on other projects. But it seems like the heir to Luke Skywalker's Jedi Order will take up her lightsaber once more. Giant Freakin Robot reported that the sequel star has signed on for three upcoming Star Wars projects. The nature of those projects is currently a mystery.

Rebooting The Sequel Trilogy

If you spend any time in any Star Wars forums, you know there is a small, but vocal, group that routinely calls for the erasure or rebooting of the sequel trilogy. Search those terms on reddit or Twitter, and you'll see several comments to that effect, though they generally don't garner many conversations. There's even a Change.org petition with over 5,000 signatures requesting the reboot.

If you're hoping to see a do-over on the sequel trilogy, news of Ridley's return might look like a step in that direction. It's unlikely that the three projects she signed on for will be a remake of her previous work, though. Kathleen Kennedy has expressed interest in bringing the characters back in new ways, and it seems unlikely that Disney will expend the resources to rewrite scripts and reassemble actors for a project they have already completed. The missed opportunity of Colin Trevorrow's original Star Wars Episode 9 script may be devastating, but that's unlikely to change.

That said, if they did decide to change this story, the Star Wars universe has a mechanism to accomplish that. Ezra Bridger once used the World Between Worlds to pull Ahsoka out of a moment in which she died, thereby changing her future. This could give Star Wars a Flashpoint-Esque reboot button, but Ridley's projects will likely tread new ground instead.

The Next Group Of Shows

Ridley's three projects could be the next wave of Star Wars TV shows. The current Mandalorian universe wouldn't make sense for an appearance from Rey, because they take place before she is even born. So, if she appears in a series, it will be a new title.

Rey's story concluded with her defeating the Emperor and building her lightsaber. It was obvious she intended to carry on the Jedi, but the sequels offered no insight into what that looks like. A series could follow Rey establishing yet another Jedi Order, while hopefully learning from their mistakes this time. Between Marvel and Star Wars, Disney has tended to overlap a few shows at a time, so it stands to reason that a Rey series would be accompanied by other shows she would appear in. If this is the plan, though, it's probably many years away since every show in the Mandalorian group of series hasn't even been released yet.

Animation

Ridley has lent her voice to a couple of animated Star Wars projects already, including Star Wars: Forces of Destiny and Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance. For years, Star Wars television programming consisted entirely of animated projects. Shows like Star Wars: Clone Wars and Star Wars: Rebels told great stories and continue to receive a lot of love.

Perhaps Ridley has been recruited to bring another animated series to life. It's also possible that the three projects are not three of the same projects. Maybe she will do a few animated shorts in the style of Forces of Destiny while working on a live-action series and a game.

Video Games

For much of the franchise's existence, Star Wars has included video game releases with a narrative focus. The 2010s brought a drought of that style of the game until the release of Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order. Fallen Order had a successful release and another story-focused game, Star Wars: Eclipse is on the horizon.

Ridley's voice has brought Rey to life in a handful of Star Wars games already, like Star Wars: Battlefront II and Lego Star Wars. One of the upcoming projects could be a game that includes Rey.

A New Trilogy

If Rey's story is set to continue, it will likely happen in a trilogy exploring the era beyond the First Order. After all, trilogies have been Star Wars' bread and butter for four decades. Perhaps a new trilogy would explore Rey's creation of a Jedi Order, or it could follow a time jump and show the adventures of that Order after it is well-established. With Star Wars' tendency to utilize the same characters and settings, again and again, it would be a refreshing change of pace to explore an era with no preexisting work to bind it. There is a case to be made that the sequel trilogy had very little chance of success because of the weight of fan expectations. Star Wars could shine with the opportunity to tell new stories unmoored from tradition and expectation.

Star Wars film projects are slated from 2023, 2025, and 2027. That first date is currently planned for Rogue Squadron, but creative differences have delayed production and may bump it out of that slot. There are also film projects with no publicized details coming from Kevin Feige, Taika Waititi, and J.D. Dillard. In addition to these, Rian Johnson is still slated to produce a trilogy. Given how polarizing The Last Jedi was, it would be a bold step to have Johnson continue Rey's story, but it would certainly take the character into new territory.
