Oven Baked Round Steak

When I was growing up, my mother made this Oven Baked Round Steak Recipe for us at least once a month, usually on Sundays.

Because it needs to bake in the oven for a few hours, she'd prepare everything and slide it in the oven as we were on our way out the door to church.

When we came home, she'd prepare the side dishes and lunch was ready and on the table in about 15 minutes.

Today, I also make this dish on Sundays, about once a month, and my own family continues to enjoy the tradition!

When I was first married, Nick was in enlisted in the Navy and I worked as a Bank Teller.

We obviously didn't have a lot of money, and I needed easy recipes to make as I learned to cook for us.

This was perfect because Round Steak was an inexpensive cut of beef, that gets really tender baking at low temperatures over the course of a few hours.

Fast forward twenty years and three children later, and it's still a great recipe for our family.

Having three boys who are teenagers that eat an incredible amount of food, this recipe is adaptable.

I can easily add additional cuts of round steak to the pan, and adjust the quantity of gravy that I'm making, if I need to, while still keeping on budget.

Oven Baked Round Steak

I begin by combining the cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, brown gravy mix, and water in a mixing bowl.

Place the Round Steak in a baking dish.

Pour gravy mixture over the round steak.

Bake in the oven for 3 hours. *NOTE: For THINNER round steaks you may need to reduce the cooking time. For THICKER steaks, you may need to increase the cooking time.

For lower sodium versions, use reduced sodium Cream of Mushroom, Cream of Chicken, and Brown Gravy Mix.

Remove from oven, and serve.

This dish pairs well with Mashed Potatoes and Roasted Green Beans.

Per reader request, I developed an Easy Crock Pot Round Steak Recipe and an Instant Pot Round Steak Recipe!

Sprite Rolls

The family also loves when I bake a batch of Sprite Biscuits to serve with Round Steak. The sprite biscuits require just 4 ingredients, to make, and are very delicious homemade rolls!

Friends who've enjoyed this meal in our home have proclaimed it among the best oven baked steak recipes they've tried.

For dessert, consider making these Green Apple Dumplings.

They do require 7 ingredients, but one of them is Sprite, so if you're already using a can for the Sprite Biscuits, you can use some of what's left to make the dumplings!

*7 Up or other Lemon Lime Soda also works as a substitute.

Sprite is something we usually have on hand in the pantry, so that's what I use.

Brown Gravy SauceInstead of paying $1 per packet of Brown Gravy Sauce, I now buy the big 21 oz bottle from Amazon, which equals approximately 14 packages (42 tablespoons if my calculations are correct).

My local warehouse club sells it too, but it's $2 cheaper currently at Amazon.

It has instructions on the label, but I use 3 tablespoons with 1 cup of water to equal one packet.

Less water makes it thicker, more water makes it thinner.

Since my family thinks brown gravy is a requirement for mashed potatoes, it saves me money to keep the big jar in the pantry versus buying multiple packets at the supermarket every week.

Oven Baked Round SteakHow to Store Leftover Round Steak:

I store leftovers in a Rubbermaid storage container, in the refrigerator. Reheat in the microwave for 1-2 minutes, until desired temperature is achieved. Leftovers can be safely stored for 2-3 days in the refrigerator.

While uncooked Round Steak can be frozen, I have never tried freezing cooked round steak.

Round Steak Tips & Tricks:

For my family of 5, with three teenage boys, I now use 5 pounds of round steak.

One of us is now allergic to mushrooms, so I only use cream of chicken. For 5 pounds of meat, I still use 2 cans of cream of chicken. It makes enough gravy for us.

To make a thicker gravy, add 4 tbsp brown gravy to 1 cup of water.

To make a thinner gravy, use 2 tbsp brown gravy to 1 cup of water.

To make MORE gravy, double or triple the brown gravy and water you use.  (You can also make this on the stove top, without baking).

To give the gravy a twang, add 1 pkg Dry Ranch Seasoning and 2 tbsp butter to the gravy mix.

To cook longer (if you'll be away when it cooks, reduce temp to 300).

I don't suggest increasing temp to cook faster.

Round Steak should be cooked low and slow to be more tender.

TOO fast or too hot with result in a tough meat.

Oven temps and times can vary. In Oklahoma, I cooked at 300 for 3 hours because the oven cooked hot. In NH at a higher altitude, I cooked at 325 for 3 1/4 hours. Adjust accordingly for your situation.

Update: A few people have emailed to ask what type of oven safe baking dish I use. I received a 9×13 Pyrex Baking Dish as a wedding gift, 20 years ago. It's still the same dish I use today. While I don't know how much it cost back then, Amazon does offer a similar item in a pack of 2 for under $20. Oxo has a Freezer to Oven safe 9×13 pan, with a lid, at a reasonable price as well. On a side note, the items that I recall receiving as wedding gifts that have held up well under frequent use over the past 20 years are items that I like to gift at wedding showers. This makes the list!

These are a few of the items I find helpful in my own kitchen when preparing this Oven Baked Steak Recipe:
